I agree with you that typically younger people want to claim superiority over others to overcome their own insecurities which could say a lot about emotions and need for control in general. A more contented person is generally less anxious internally. Part of me thinks this is because we push this mountain to climb philosophy on children which can cause a lot of undue suffering for some that don't respond well to it (capitalism).
