I think there is nuance to what you speak of. Although true in essence, I think a lack of trust in the system or "the game" - that it is unfair, causes many to think that their honest efforts will not be rewarded equitably. You can say that the world is unfair but that is why many would prefer a cheat code to the good life. I agree with you that this route may make them poorer in the long run. It is much better to enjoy perfecting a craft you enjoy and what peaks your curiosity as it will pay dividends for your self esteem, and allow you to form a community based around what you enjoy, along with the benefit of actually being useful to society but at the same time, there are many very talented people that were buried 6ft deep before their talent and works were ever known.
