Why Writing with an Objective Might Not Be Right for You

Does pressure stifle the fun and creativity of the writing process? I know that it did for me. Only when I finally let go of my imagined future and the associated illusions of grandeur, was I able to let my creativity flow in the present.

Where does inspiration come from anyway? It comes from the square total of your life experience and the unconscious. Your curiosity is fed by the questions you desperately need an answer to and the things you have yet to experience.

Now I am not saying that writing without an objective is for everybody. Many people thrive under pressure. There are those that are writing for a living or have the desire to make it their primary source of income. Those with that in mind, will need to hit deadlines and be efficient in their writing process.

Just bear in mind that if you do choose to make a living through writing, you may have to sacrifice your ability to write about the subjects that truly matter to you. Fiction writing in particular makes very few writers enough money to survive on.

It is important to ask yourself, what is it about writing that brings you joy? Is it merely putting pen or keyboard to page, crafting your own prose or is it more to do with what you are writing about?
